Lyrics:

The new day dawns,
And I am practicing my purpose once again.
It is fresh and it is fruitful if I win but if I lose,
Oooooo I don’t know.
I will be tired but I will turn and I will go,
Only guessing till I get there then I’ll know,
Oh oh oh I will know.

All the children walking home past the factories
Could see the light that’s shining in my window as I write this song to you.
All the cars running fast along the interstate
Can feel the love that radiates
Illuminating what I know is true,
All will be well.
Even after all the promises you’ve broken to yourself,
All will be well.
You can ask me how but only time will tell.

The winter’s cold,
But the snow still lightly settles on the trees.
And a mess is still a moment I can seize until I know,
That all will be well.
Even though sometimes this is hard to tell,
And the fight is just as frustrating as hell
All will be well.

All the children walking home past the factories,
Could see the light that’s shining in my window as I write this song to you.
All the cars running fast along the interstate
Can feel the love that radiates
Illuminating what I know is true
All will be well.
Even after all the promises you’ve broken to yourself
All will be well.
You can ask me how but only time will tell.

Keep it up and don’t give up
And chase your dreams and you will find
All in time.

All will be well.
Even after all the promises you’ve broken to yourself,
All will be well.
You can ask me how but only time will tell.

You can ask me how but only time will tell.

Reflection

We first got introduced to this song, via Katie Dutcher who sang this song spontaneously while volunteering at Karma Kitchen five years ago. It meant a lot to her. Hearing her story and song's beautiful lyrics, we couldn't get it out of our minds as well.

This song by the The Gabe Dixon Band, from their 2005 EP Live at World Cafe, proved to be a breakout album for them -- as it got featured widely, including a popular TV series in the US called Parks and Rec.

Katie explains her special connection to it: "I first heard this song on a "mix tape" (remember those??) my college boyfriend made for me back in 2007 or so. I fell in love with it immediately, and immediately, it went on my "repeat over and over again" list. Its lyrics and message are beautiful, of course, but this song also happens to hold a rather unique place in my heart: it was the first song I ever really wrote a harmony to.

I remember that experience clearly, actually. I would listen to the song a lot while driving, and one day, out of nowhere, I just started humming a countermelody. At first, I didn't even realize I wasn't singing along - I was just singing something I "heard," coming from ... somewhere. But I eventually realized that what I was singing wasn't in the song. And though it took me a little while to get it right, that line and this song is the first time I can remember hearing, and creating, something for a song - something not already 'there' -- that I felt made it more beautiful."
